Installation of Redemption by Jukhee Kwon
Asia House, 2019
Major new installation by Jukhee Kwon installed at Asia House for the Bagri Foundation Literature Festival in 2019. Kwon creates works using the printed pages of abandoned and disused books, which she cuts and manipulates by hand to create magnificent sculptures that brim with energy. Redemption comprises of three Christian prayer books the author rescued from the ruins of an old convent in Italy. Her technique is a slow painstaking process but the act is mediative and is as much about redeeming the books as it is about offering redemption to the artist herself.
Kwon completed her BA Degree in Fine Art at Chung-Ang University, Seoul in 2005 and achieved her Master’s Degree in Book Arts at Camberwell College of Arts, London, in 2012. Her large-scale installation 'Arabesque Dream', was exhibited at Abu Dhabi Art Fair in 2013. Kwon has presented her work in several exhibitions in the UK, Belgium and France and her works are in private collections as well as the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK.
